Celebrate Black Teachers and Students

This project is part of the Black History Month celebration because it supports a Black teacher or a school where the majority of the students are Black.

My Students

I teach the first grade newcomer class in a low-income, high-poverty urban school district. All 19 of my students are English Language Learners with English as their second language. Students in this class speak six different primary languages!

They come to school every day eager to learn and I am proud to be their teacher!

I have already seen such growth with my students this year. Their reading levels are going up, the amount of sight words they can read is increasing, and they are becoming so confident in their writing and math skills. I can't wait to see how much they grow this year!

My Project

We are so grateful to have a set of 6 Chromebook laptops to use in our class, as well as a grade level cart to share. My students could really use flexible seating options when they use the computers, and when they work in partners. What makes these seats so great is they will be able to also use them when writing and reading, as well as with the laptops. We need a set of stools for our guided reading table because chairs will not fit around the small space.

I have the best group of students this year that are so eager to learn, but they are so SHY!

I am hoping that using a microphone in class will give each of them the opportunity to share what they are learning with each other, but still use their natural quiet voice.
