My Students
We are a public school located in the heart of Wynwood which is also a low-income area in Miami. Because of this, students lack access to various resources. 30% of the students we service live in shelters. We are a Title I school which means ninety-eight percent students qualify for free-reduced lunch which shows there need for access to resources. We are in a large urban area with 533 students. Our school serves students from eight different homeless shelters and drug-rehab facilities. Thirty-nine percent of our students are English Language Learners. Like most children, our students are curious, eager to learn new things, and open to new experiences. Unfortunately, their economic situations do not always allow them the opportunities afforded to other students.
My Project
The printer, ink, and jump drives will make writing and learning about writing more profitable. Students need to see the end results ! What do I mean ? I mean that every time a writing assignment is given, they need to be motivated to put forth their maximum potential to publish their writing pieces. These items will make a big difference in my classroom because my students are learning how to be college ready. In addition, since we have received several students who were relocated from Puerto Rico and impacted by Hurricane Maria, we want to make sure that we help those students acquire the English language. This will be done through labeling. We (My students and I) know that transitioning from one place to another might be hard and we would like to change that. We do not want these students to feel left out when they enter our classroom aka safe haven, especially after experiencing a natural disaster which caused them to relocate from their homes. We realize that we must adjust our classroom to a bilingual environment and ensure that everyone has the chance to be expose to our literacy rich environment. Just as we experienced Hurricane Irma, which was a devastating hurricane we would like to make sure we mesh together to support our newcomers. I would like all of my students to experience learning in an enjoyable environment. With your help, we truly believe this can be done !
