Help me give my students a Canon Vixia camera for building video production skills.
This project is part of the Black History Month celebration because it supports a Black teacher or a school where the majority of the students are Black.
I teach Technology and Media Arts to K-8 students in a Creative & Performing Arts Academy that serves a predominantly African American population. Our K-5th grade students enter the school through a lottery system and learn a variety of art disciplines, including Dance, Drama, Visual Art, Music, and (Digital) Media Arts. Our 6th-8th grade students audition for a major to focus on for three years, where they routinely complete college level assignments.
The goal of my curriculum is to place real-world creative skills in the hands of my students.
We are a public school, but a magnet program. K-5 students are selected via a lottery. 6th-8th grade students audition for placement into their major.
My Media Arts students do a variety of projects that require them to record and edit video, from documenting school events like the Hour of Code to creating their own 5 minute digital stories for our County Film Festival.
While we have some cameras already, we often have more students wanting to record than we have cameras to use.
Helping us purchase this camera will allow my students to complete their work more efficiently, without having to wait for another group to finish first.
To date, the Canon Vixia series has been the most versatile camera I've been able to find for that price range. Students can connect an external mic or even get audio directly off of a soundboard during a school performance. We can also output video directly to a Tricaster for teaching TV production skills!
There is a wide variety of cameras that can be used for video production, even phones! With that said, this camera is the best I've been able to find for the work that we do in my classroom.
