Camera Captures Creative Writing

My students need a digital camera to take photos to prompt creative writing.

My Students

Do you remember a time when you let your imagination and creativity loose and pretended. My students don't play pretend games anymore. They live in a digital world and I think a digital camera will bring creativity to their writing.

My students live in Nevada.

A place that is urban and transient. They are in a place of instant and constant change with a lot of stress on their little shoulders. Creativity and expression are not the first things on their minds, but it is there. When you give a child a camera they can't help it,they become creative.

My Project

I teach a fifth grade writing class and my students have a difficult time being creative when writing stories. They often have a difficult time coming up with ideas for writing. I would have them take photos to illustrate stories or poems. Take photos or videos for illustrating emotions. Take photos or videos of nouns, verbs, adjectives, adverbs. Take photos of classroom events for student journaling. Write about the photo of costume day, hat day, book character day, etc. Create photo vocabulary cards for ESL students and many more activities.

This project is important to me because I believe it will inspire students to not only become better writers, but to also become open and creative individuals.

Perhaps it will inspire some students to become authors or photographers.

This project will directly impact historically underfunded classrooms.
