Calming Classroom Creatures: Alluring Aquatic Ambience

My Project

I have done research on the positive effects of classroom pets. When I discovered that an aquarium can do more than just provide a unique decoration, I purchased and brought in two aquariums for my classroom last year. The results were amazing! Students enjoyed watching, discussing, naming and caring for the fish. The aquariums gave students an opportunity to look up from their computers and enjoy a few minutes watching creatures in their habitat.

I would like to purchase more aquariums and supplies so that all students can benefit from watching and helping care for aquatic creatures.

My goal is to have an aquarium at each long table so that students can easily see them. This will allow all students to easily view the fish while they are doing their work. It will also build responsibility and collaboration as each group helps care for the habitat at their table.

Right now students tend to sit at the two tables where the aquariums are set up, making large groups around those tables. They have asked for more aquariums to be set up around the room so that they can all have access to viewing the fish and frogs. It is a joy to watch high school students get so involved in caring for the fish and watching them grow. They have looked up information on the fish and done their own research about their care and backgrounds.

While I will continue spending money to buy fish, food, plants and decorations, I would love to get a few more aquariums bought so I don't have to purchase these.
