Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Project

My students are lovely preschoolers who have special needs. They learn through play. Social skills, such as turn-taking and dealing with their feelings are very important for us to learn in class. My students are learning to regulate their emotions in appropriate ways.

I plan to create a calming area in class which contains a tumbling mat, sensory beanbag chairs, sensory toys, as well as social-emotional board books.

The goal of this project is to create a relaxing space so that my students can go to and learn to deescalate their feelings in appropriate ways. My students can look at the picture books that contain calming techniques such as deep breathing or social stories. In addition, the calming area provides some sensory toys, such as a calming cuddle ball and weighted shoulder wraps which provide sensory support for the students in helping them regulate their emotions.

This project will directly impact historically underfunded classrooms.
