Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Project

In kindergarten, we have a lot of big feelings in little bodies. My students are learning how to share, take turns, handle frustration, and manage emotions—sometimes all at once! Many of them need a safe space where they can slow down, reset, and feel supported.

I want to create a calm, cozy space in our classroom where students feel safe, supported, and in control of their emotions.

With flexible seating like a soft bean bag and chair bands for movement, students will have a comfortable place to go when they need a break. Sensory tools like fidgets, weighted plush items, calming bottles, and breathing buddies will help them work through their emotions in a healthy way, and social-emotional learning activities will support them in recognizing and expressing their feelings.

To make the space truly calming, I’ve added softer lighting and light covers to reduce the harsh classroom lights. A rolling storage cart will hold all of the calming corner resources, keeping everything organized, accessible, and easy for students to use independently.

This calming corner will give my students the tools they need to feel safe, regulate their emotions, and come back to learning ready to do their best.

This project will directly impact historically underfunded classrooms.
