Living in a low income/high poverty area, my students often do not have the support at home to make learning easy for them. They aren't given the experiences that most child have. Most haven't traveled to areas outside of their city. Some go home after school to stay with family members, friends, or even friends of friends. My students' families work hard to make ends meet, often at the expense of good, old-fashioned quality time.
I work in a Title I school where the students and their families, along with their successes, are a priority.
My students work extremely hard, each and every day. They come to school with smiling faces and stories to tell. Everyone wants to share the things that are going on in their lives.
My Project
Play in school is a vital part of the day. According to the National Association for the Education of Young Children, children need to explore, develop the ability to apply the knowledge and skills they have acquired, learn to self manage, and learn to work and play together.
Through play, children learn to be responsible, thoughtful, and respectful working adults.
The books I am requesting in the dramatic play center encourage print awareness and will encourage children to explore the relationship between reading and writing.
The costumes and materials will be used to pretend how to be doctors, veterinarians, and nurses. The students will practice developing oral language and vocabulary.
All of these skills are essential in becoming hard-working members of our society in the future.
