My Students

With funding limited in California public schools, the challenge and tradition of reading CRYM (California Young Reader Medal) nominees is in danger.

My students are Fourth through Eighth Graders, and many are avid readers.

My job as school librarian is to identify and purchase engaging books. For the past five years, a very successful reading challenge has been the contest offered by CRYM, because the titles are very popular with the students.

My Project

I read these books, read them aloud to the students or booktalk them, then offer the CRYM challenge: Read all three books in a category in order to vote for your favorite. I have requested one of each in the Picture Books for Older Readers category: Moon Over Star by Diana Aston John Paul George & Ben by Lane Smith Four Feet, Two Sandals by Karen Williams and multiple copies in the Intermediate Reader category: Igraine the Brave by Cornelia Funke Greetings from Planet Earth by Barbara Kerley Zorgamazoo by Robert Paul Weston The students will read, discuss and report on these books. Then votes will be collected from all in our school, then be added to votes from students all over California.

At the end of this school year, the results of the state wide votes will be announced and compared to the votes from our school.

Our children will benefit from being part of a larger, state-wide project, and from reading and sharing good books.
