Calculators for AP Calculus

My students need 24 graphing calculators to be fully prepared to take the AP Calculus BC and/or AB exam.

My Students

Our school is on a semester block schedule, which means that our classes meet for 100 minutes each day. This time allows for introduction of new material, but also for extended time to work collaboratively on exploring and mastering the AP Calculus subject matter.

Many of our students are from low income families and are eligible for free school lunches.

To be able to provide all of them with equitable access to graphing calculators will continue to greatly improve their success on the AP Exam. The calculator is used as a teaching and learning tool as well as a problem-solving tool. About 40% of the AP Exam is calculator based, and students need to be proficient in the use of a graphing calculator to solve the questions. That is why a class set of graphing calculators will support my students greatly in their success in the course and their preparation for the AP Exam. Besides the AP Calculus AB and BC courses, I also teach the Pre-Calculus course. The use of graphing calculators in this course will also benefit the students greatly.

My Project

In our class, students are seated in groups of four; and most days, after new material is presented, students work cooperatively on problems or explorations from our textbook and on investigations from other sources. Students are often instructed to solve problems analytically and then support or confirm their solutions graphically and vice-versa. Students work together explaining to each other how and why they arrived at their answers, using graphing calculators where necessary. Appropriate use of a graphing calculator is a crucial aspect of this work. I am requesting 24 graphing calculators and a calculator carrying bag for my students.

In the AP Calculus AB and BC course topics are presented in four ways: graphically, numerically, algebraically, and verbally.

To be successful in the class--and ultimately on the AP Exam--it is necessary that all students have access to a graphing calculator at all times.
