Our high school, located in Jersey City, NJ - just across the Hudson River from Manhattan - is a public, urban, magnet school with an extremely diverse population. New Jersey Monthly Magazine has just ranked our school #1 in the state of NJ, but severe budget cuts have drastically reduced our classroom supplies and resources available to students.
We have more than 80 students taking AP Chemistry this year - but these students need additional resources to make classroom success possible.
AP Chemistry is a course with a high level of rigor, but without access to calculators and other basic supplies - especially when solving complex problems - it is difficult to achieve that rigor.
My Project
Simply put students don't have the calculators needed to perform fundamental calculations in our AP Chemistry class.
It's also extremely helpful to have a uniform type of calculator to teach students how to perform the specific types of calculations they are learning among the myriad of random calculators and phone calculator apps available.
In addition, my school has not been able to fund dry erase markers for both the classroom dry erase board and student boards for use in problem solving. I also use a personal copier to make copies for student handouts.
An ice machine would expand the number of experiments I can perform, instead of having to make small batches of ice cubes in the freezer. This item can be shared with the entire science program.
