Calculator Quest: Help Us Crunch the Numbers

Help me give my students new calculators to have hands on manipulatives to calculate math equations.

My Project

I work in a Title I school in Robeson County, North Carolina, where I have the privilege of teaching some of the most amazing students in the world. I love my students deeply, and I believe they deserve every opportunity and every resource needed to help them succeed.

This year was my first year teaching sixth grade math, and I quickly realized that the calculators available to my students had seen many years of use.

Some no longer worked properly, some were missing keys, and others had screens so scratched that students struggled to read the numbers. I believe that when students are given the tools and environment that show they are valued, they are empowered to do their very best.

Many of my students come from homes where basic necessities such as food, clothing, and other resources can be difficult to access. I want my classroom to be a safe haven—a place where students feel supported, cared for, and equipped to learn. Along with meeting their needs, I believe they deserve access to the tools that create a positive and successful learning experience.

While my students do have access to calculator apps on their Chromebooks, many prefer using a physical calculator they can hold, touch, and use as they work through problems. Having the right tools allows students to build confidence, independence, and a stronger understanding of math.

I know that providing these calculators will make a meaningful difference for my students. I have heard so many inspiring stories about DonorsChoose, and I hope that soon my classroom will become part of that legacy of people coming together to support students and teachers.
