I teach general music to students in kindergarten through 5th grade. The school district is located in a primarily Caucasian area directly outside of a larger metropolitan region. In addition to my school's general education classes, we have a fantastic program for students diagnosed with ASD (autism spectrum disorder). We are the only elementary school in our school district with this type of program. Our ASD students spend time not only learning with their ASD peers, but in general education classes as well, including music classes.
I want to ensure my students have the right materials to take them to the next level as young musicians!
My Project
In my classroom, we use music as our passport to explore the world! I love introducing music as a means for teaching about global citizenship and interconnectedness through music. Cajons are a type of box drum from Peru that are found in Spanish Flamenco music and have African ancestry.
Cajon drums will allow my students to take their learning out of the walls of our classroom.
Not only are cajons a drum, but they are a functionally seat for sitting. My students will be able to take these drums outside to help them explore rhythms of our world. This is particularly helpful due to the COVID-19 pandemic.
Is it a drum? Is it a chair? It is a cajon! Please help my students take their music education to the next level!
