This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Students

My students come from a high-poverty, high crime neighborhood. They need engaging activities to keep them busy after school and on the weekends. Positive activities will help them keep out of trouble and help them create positive relationships with like-minded individuals.

My students have little of the luxuries that many of us take for granted.

They live in a tough neighborhood and really appreciate when I give them exposure to things they have not experienced previously. They went to an art gallery last week and many had never been to one before. They are hard-working and well-behaved most of the time. I am proud to call myself their teacher and will always feel obligated to try to get them more resources and have them experience what other kids get to experience.

My Project

I have been playing hockey since I was a child. I brought in a couple of sticks and balls and started letting the students take turns using them. I showed them basic stick-handling skills and how to take wrist-shots and slap shots. They really took to it quickly. Now we have to draw names every day before we go out for break to see which two students get to play hockey with each other while the rest of the class plays another game. Since then I checked around, and there are no organized youth street-hockey opportunities anywhere in town for elementary-school students. I want to get a street-hockey set to start an after-school club for our students and eventually expand it into an elementary league. I am requesting 2 goals, 2 goalie masks, 1 set of hockey sticks, and 6 sets of hockey balls to get the street-hockey club started.

Please help us get this fitness equipment so the students at our school can learn the sport of street-hockey and we can start an after-school club.

Hockey was one sport where I excelled and without a friend who exposed me to the sport, maybe I would never have played. I want to make sure some child who may like and excel at hockey doesn't lose his or her opportunity to shine.
