Help me give my students the milkweed [and other] seeds, aprons, knee pads and gardening tools to help save urban monarch butterflies in their newly formed butterfly garden.
This project is part of the Black History Month celebration because it supports a Black teacher or a school where the majority of the students are Black.
My Students
My students are a great group of students who've developed a strong sense of empathy over the course of this school year.
Their empathy for people and living things is empowering.
I am glad to be their teacher and witness their awesome growth.
My Project
After reading an article in class about the Monarch butterfly becoming extinct in urban areas because of the lack of parks and increase in highrise housing, my students wanted to take on the challenge of helping the Monarch butterfly stay in our city.
The decision to put a butterfly garden in the community - in our remodeled schoolyard, playground, with a garden area, was unanimously agreed upon.
Students will be taught about the Monarch butterfly and garden preparation and maintenance. This project's tools will help my students 'tend' the future home area to our school's butterfly garden.
Students will [with my facilitation] put a butterfly garden plan together that includes maintenance assistance with other classrooms. This garden will target various learning skills in English language arts, math, science, and social studies.
