On the list of 101 middle school excuses, "But, my notebook broke," is right up at the top. Unfortunately, the broken notebook is really not the fault of my incredibly well-intentioned middle school students. I work in a severely under-resourced school where nearly all of the students qualify for free lunch. Correspondingly, most of them cannot afford the appropriate school supplies necessary for academic success. As a result, they purchase inexpensive notebooks, 2 for $1, which fall apart within months. I have worked tirelessly to round up supplies, purchase supplies, and recycle supplies from previous years. However, with 60 students, that leaves little room for teaching. I would like to eliminate this problem, and aforementioned excuse, by providing the supplies my young scholars need to truly thrive. With so many obstacles facing these students it would make a world of difference to them to simply have a sturdy composition notebook that lasted through an entire year! Help me give them an outlet to their middle school voice! Help me provide composition notebooks and pens! Help me streamline academia by eliminating one of the 101 middle school excuses! Help me eradicate one obstacle facing these potential future Nobel Prize winners! Help me, help them! Thank you.
