We all have those little somethings that keep us going on a daily basis. For some, it's a photo of an inviting beach that smooths out even the most trying of days. For me, it is my students, and a special student in particular.
I am a teacher in a very under-resourced school in Brooklyn, NY. I teach a class of seventh-grade students. This year, not a single student came into my class reading on grade level. My special student, in particular, was reading below a second-grade level.
Throughout the year I have struggled to find books that interest my students, but that are also appropriate for their various reading levels. This is difficult, but it is particularly difficult when someone in seventh grade reads at a second-grade level, as was the case with my special student. The students refuse to read "baby" books as they call them. So, we don't have a lot to choose from.
However, one day my special student discovered "The Zach Files" books. These books are written for lower-level readers but appeal to middle-school students because they are quite silly. My special student ate them up -- each and every one in my library, and after that, every other one that I could round up around school and in local book stores. Since the first book, this student's reading level has improved by almost 1.5 years!
I have to keep my students, and this student in particular, engaged. I am asking for funding to purchase two copies each of the 18 additional and remaining titles in "The Zach Files" series.
My students are really working hard to become a better readers. These books are an invaluable tool that will truly help them.
Please help me help my students fulfill their goals of becoming better readers. It is because of their inspired motivation that I keep teaching.
My special student will thank you, and all of my future generations of students will thank you, and, of course, I will thank you.
Thank you.
