I am a teacher in a very under resourced school in Brooklyn, NY. I teach a class of seventh-grade learning-disabled students. Not a single student came into my class reading on grade level. Some students read at or below a second-grade level. Throughout the year, I have struggled to find books that not only interest my students but also are appropriate for their various reading levels. This is difficult, but it is particularly difficult when students in seventh grade read at a second-grade level. The students refuse to read "baby" books (as they call them). So, we don't have a lot to choose from. However, I have found that these low level readers LOVE to read ... IF I can find books that interest them. Therein lies the challenge! My lowest readers are interested in sports, teen issue and series books. Unfortunately, they have exhausted my library! My goal is to feed their newly found reading appetites! My students progress is already apparent. Some readers have increased their reading levels by 2.5 years!!! My mission is to keep them engaged. The books that I am requesting will be invaluable tools that will truly benefit my students. Please help me to help my students fulfill their goals of becoming better readers. It is because of their inspired motivation that I keep teaching. On behalf of my students and all of my future generations of students, I thank you.
