Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Students

I work in a Title I school with low income families where 97% of our students receive free breakfast and lunch. I have many different backgrounds and cultures in my classroom and the range of abilities is just as broad.

My students are eager to learn and excited to come to school each day.

I help them build a positive attitude and confidence within themselves so that they can be a success in every area of their lives. They are hardworking and thrive in an environment where we celebrate their individual strengths.

My Project

Reading strategies and comprehension are extremely important in 3rd grade. Due to the pandemic more children have fallen behind in reading and the learning gaps continue to get bigger.

Small group differentiated reading instruction is imperative in my classroom.

With many different reading levels, the focus must be on meeting students’ individual needs. Teaching students phonics, phonemic awareness, reading skills and comprehension in a small group will give them practice with support. Allowing students an opportunity to practice these skills through hands-on activities and games will help to build confidence. Students will also be engaged and will work together to become more independent.

This project will directly impact historically underfunded classrooms.
