Building on Literacy and Embracing Diversity

Help me give my students books and materials that focus on cultural diversity, Eric Carle books they love to read, Create On-Magna Tiles they like to play, book bins and a couch for our classroom library.

My Project

The diversity in cultural background, academic and language skills in our K-2 students from Special Day Class is what make them special. Some of them are curious emergent readers while others students show consistent interest in books. Providing them with print–rich learning activities will help enrich their reading experiences.

Children can make connections with the books they read and it is easy to learn more vocabulary and concepts when there are characters that look and sound like themselves or pictures that catches their interest.

We will use the Eric Carle books to practice reading high frequency words and picture recognition since it has repetitive lines and colorful illustrations then the CreatOn Magna-tiles are for enrichment activities. The multicultural-theme books can serve as a springboard to get familiarity and understanding of diversity and another avenue for them to learn life skills. We will also create an art project the depicts differences and being special using the skin-tone colors. Lastly,would like request for book bins and a couch so they can be comfortable while reading or listening to these beautiful stories in our classroom library. Reading and making connections are as important for our students with special needs.
