Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Students

We are a TK-8, Spanish Dual Immersion school located in East Oakland. Our diverse school serves students from every zip code in Oakland that come from racially, linguistically, and economically diverse backgrounds. Each student at our school works to learn and improve both languages as they develop into bilingual and biliterate citizens.

I want to create a classroom that serves as “windows and mirrors”, where my students identity is at the center of our learning while also exposing them to new experiences.

They inspire me with their resilience, flexibility and excitement to learn. They show up for each other every day with kindness, humor and love.

In a district that has been struggling to fund many supports for our students, teachers have been relying on donations from the community and outside contributors to get our needs met.

My Project

The items in this project will support new literacy centers, silent reading, high level text for our science expedition and play centers with a language focus.

As first grade emerging readers who completed kindergarten virtually, my literacy priorities this year during a pandemic are 1)To instill a love for reading 2)Support students with learning gaps we typically don't see at this scale.

I am excited to have the tools to help my students relearn letter formations, have engaging phonics centers to practice blending syllables and have diverse read-alouds that represent their experiences. Lastly, I want to provide opportunities for students to engage in literacy through play (storytelling, puppets, letter beads, magnetic tile letters etc).

This project will directly impact historically underfunded classrooms.
