Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Project

The upper elementary grades are the time to continue building the foundation of a child's education and his or her love of school. I work in a Title I school with a diverse population. These children enter school with a variety of backgrounds, abilities, strengths, and weaknesses. All of my students are Multilingual Learners (MLL). Some are from broken homes and some don't have homes at all. All of my students receive free or reduced lunch. Despite the challenges they face, they are so eager to learn and work hard every day to read, write, and solve higher-level problems. They continuously amaze me with their determination, despite any setbacks they may face at their young age. I truly teach the most amazing students in the world!

Not only do my students love learning language, they also love the support of the emotional support crochet figures I have in my classroom!

These small animals with their positive word puns serve as tangible mini-mindfulness anchors, as they help reduce stress and spark smiles with their soft texture and encouraging presence. What better way to learn language and spread some cheer than giving the students crochet kits for the holidays? This will give them the opportunity to learn a new skill by making their own emotional support figures and a chance to write positive affirmations for themselves. I hope this gift reminds them to stay motivated and uplifted and that they are worthy of all life has to offer.
