Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
I work with a lot of English Language Learners who have limited time because they also have to work in order to help their families. Many of my students come to school with a minimum of school supplies. Very few have books to read at home. Their self-esteem is usually shot by the time they get to me. Many have become discouraged about learning and opportunities available to them. I see many taking on adult roles, such as parenting younger siblings, become care-takers for parents, being the source of income for a family, and so on. I find that many have been disappointed by the adults in their lives.
My Project
I want students to know that learning can be fun again. I want students to walk into a room and see color and creativity. I want them to enjoy looking around the room. I want them to know that school doesn't have to stop being creative and fun. I want to print out pictures of activities throughout the year of what they are accomplishing. I want to make decorations and create boards around my classroom that inspire them and highlight their achievements. I want to build up their self-esteem again. I want them to be teenagers, even though many are taking on adult responsibilities.
I chose items that would make classes fun again.
I have included items to promote a more interactive learning environment. I have supplies that will help me create and acknowledge my students' strengths. I want to build my students up again. I want to implore the motto "I Don't Quit!" I think presentation is everything. I want to make sure my classroom screams: "I care about you! I will try my best but I need you to try your best!" I want them to know that I am the adult and they are allowed to be kids.
