This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Project

I teach 3 groups of 30 students. My students have developed an interest in chess. We have several boards but only a mis matched bucket of pieces. I have three boys who are slowly teaching their peers how to play chess. Communication skills are being practiced, sportsmanship is becoming refined and friendships are being forged, often with the most unlikely of pairs. I would like enough pieces for us to have seven complete chess sets to use with our existing boards. These budding chess players are starting to come in early before school and stay in at recess and after they get their lunches. They are engaging in a personal interest that will last a life time.
