Building Empathy and Literacy With Refugee: the Graphic Novel

Help me give my students an accessible and engaging way to improve their literacy skills while deepening their understanding of social issues. Refugee: The Graphic Novel will inspire empathy and boost reading confidence in our students’ educational journey.

My Project

I am a middle/high school librarian at a 6-12 Title I school. Our middle school library is seeking 30 copies of Refugee: The Graphic Novel by Alan Gratz to support our 7th grade students who are developing their reading skills. The novel is a required 7th grade read and some of our students need additional support . This graphic novel adaptation of the critically acclaimed story presents the powerful journeys of young refugees through accessible text and engaging visuals, making it an ideal resource for our low-level readers.

Many of our 7th graders struggle with complex texts, which limits their ability to engage with important global themes like immigration, resilience, and empathy.

By providing Refugee: The Graphic Novel, we aim to:

-Enhance reading comprehension and fluency through graphic storytelling, which combines visual literacy with narrative.

-Foster empathy and cultural awareness by exploring real-world refugee experiences in an age-appropriate format.

-Encourage reluctant readers to develop a love of reading by offering a compelling and accessible book.

-Support classroom and library discussions on social studies topics, promoting critical thinking and global citizenship.

These graphic novels will transform how our students access and understand literature. The visual format breaks down reading barriers and helps students make connections with the characters and themes, boosting both literacy skills and emotional intelligence. Ultimately, this resource will empower our students to become more confident readers and thoughtful, compassionate individuals.
