By engaging with speech bubbles and visual storytelling, students are sharpening their ability to draw inferences from context clues, contrast characters, and identify character traits and appearances — all through a dynamic, image-driven format that brings the text to life in new ways.\r\n\r\nReading has become a matter of student choice. When given the option between the traditional novel and the Graphic Novel, more students are independently selecting the Graphic Novel version of Refugee. This format has also proven to be a powerful tool for EC and ESL students — the visual imagery serves as a universal language that transcends reading level, making the story accessible and meaningful for every learner in the room.\r\n\r\nThe Graphic Novel version of Refugee has sparked something notable: students are actually reading. The format's visual pacing and concise text have removed common barriers to engagement, and rather than skimming pages, students are genuinely investing in the story. The result is a classroom where more students are completing the reading — and more importantly, connecting with it.","fullyFundedDate":1767093764156,"projectUrl":"project/building-empathy-and-literacy-with-refug/9850959/","projectTitle":"Building Empathy and Literacy With Refugee: the Graphic Novel","teacherDisplayName":"Mrs. Joyce","teacherPhotoUrl":"https://storage.donorschoose.net/dc_prod/images/teacher/profile/orig/tp10269987_orig.png?crop=1080,1080,x0,y0&width=272&height=272&fit=bounds&auto=webp&t=1758500486474","teacherClassroomUrl":"classroom/10269987"},{"teacherId":10269987,"projectId":9731123,"letterContent":"The majority of our students love to read. That is evident every week they come to the library to checkout books. During one visit, I shared the new books with the students to build enthusiasm. The impact of having these additional novels has been felt from the moment I introduced the copies to them. These novels are required reading in their grade level and they haven't started them yet but they excitedly asked their ELA teachers when they were going to start reading the novels. Here is what we hope will be an additional impact on our students. Being able to provide each student with their own copy of a novel will support stronger, more equitable literacy learning. When students don't have to share, they can read at their own pace, follow along during class discussion, and annotate the text reliably — all practices that strengthen comprehension and metacognitive skills. Individual copies let students revisit passages for close reading, and track character development and thematic threads. This fosters ownership of learning and encourages independent reading habits that transfer to other subjects.\r\n\r\nAccess to enough copies of reading material also improves participation, fluency, and differentiated instruction. Teachers can assign in-class reading, quick checks, or small-group work without having to share or wait for additional copies to come in; struggling readers can reread sections or use sticky-note supports, while advanced readers can explore extension tasks, all using the same edition. Having a copy at hand promotes reading fluency through repeated, uninterrupted practice and makes formative assessment (annotations, reading journals, exit tickets) more authentic. Finally, equitable access reduces stigma and barriers for our students who might otherwise be left out, supporting a classroom culture where every student can engage confidently with text-based learning.\r\n\r\nOur goal is to ultimately elevate our students' literacy and reading skills to grade level and beyond. Having these additional copies of novel sets is one piece of the puzzle that will help them get there.
