My Project

Hi everyone! I am a middle school math teacher. I love my students, my school, and math. My goal is to help create a love for the learning process by showing students how their brain works through authentic problem solving. In order to achieve this I need to build a Thinking Classroom. The Thinking Classroom of our dreams has whiteboards everywhere so students can work collaboratively and make their thinking visible in our math community.

Research has shown that a classroom filled with vertical whiteboards where students can work collaboratively improves their eagerness to start, their time to first notate, their time on task; as well as improves their participation, depth of discussion, persistence, knowledge mobility and non-linearity of work.

Additionally, since the majority of communication is non-verbal, standing provides a larger canvas for students to relate through things like gestures, facial expressions, tone of voice, and body language. This is huge since a large number of students in my class speak Spanish, Ukrainian, Russian and Serbian.

Finally, physically standing at the board also creates better posture which has been linked to improvements in mood and increased energy.
