Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
Everyday in an Autism classroom is different because every student in my classroom has unique perspective on life and unique needs. This year, my students will begin to learn that self-reinforcement and self-monitoring will give them the skills to become independent adults.
My classroom is a self-contained, middle school Autism classroom.
I have nine students who have extraordinary abilities and individual needs. All of my students have grown-up in poverty and attend a high needs middle school where their needs cannot always be met. They are amazing students that are beginning to learn about their own potential, but still need the tools to become young adults, ready for high school.
My Project
Many students with Autism struggle with sensory perception. Some students are over stimulated and need a place to relax. Other students need materials to work on balance and stress release. The materials I have requested will be used in the sensory center of my classroom. Students will be able to use this area to sit and relax, release extra energy, and have free space to move. This will be an area my students need when they become overwhelmed or receive a well deserved break. The students will have variety of options that will help them learn how to regulate and self-monitor their sensory needs.
Due to my school being overcrowded and under funded, special education students are often overlooked when it comes to extra funding.
My students need a space that they can be themselves and get what they need. A sensory area in my classroom will improve the conditions and experiences for my students. Students with Autism are truly unique and my students having a sensory area, begins to fill those needs.
