Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
Until last year, a significant Theatre Arts program had never existed on my campus. We worked extremely hard to build from scratch, and the dedication of fellow staff and students resulted in a program that was very successful and genuinely entertaining.
My students are dedicated to the creation of an extraordinary performing arts program.
They come from impoverished neighborhoods, and we operate with no budget. We rely on fundraising and ticket sales to support us throughout the year. Last year, thanks to small donors, we were able to gather materials to build several set pieces.
The performing arts are an essential part of fostering creativity and critical thought in students. Every child deserves the chance to express his or herself in unique and imaginative ways.
My Project
This project provides students with the basic materials they need to build theatrical flats, which is a necessary component of a dynamic and captivating set. For two years, we have used scraps, and students have been able to create basic set pieces, but we need to do more. These pieces will be used to create a Technical Theater unit for Intro to Theater Arts students. Their creations will then be used on the stage for public productions.
These materials will be used to create the wall pieces for each set that we utilize in performances throughout the year.
The initial investment in these resources is costly, but they can be used over and over again. We will be able to utilize the same pieces for the next few years. With a new coat of paint, these flats can be redesigned to create an entirely new background for any play.
In the classroom, students will learn how to construct these pieces step-by-step. They will build the initial frame, apply the canvas and gesso, then paint it using a model. This will give them a greater appreciation of all the necessary components of producing a play.
