My Students

When I accepted my kindergarten position last year, I was nervous, excited, curious, and above all, unsure of what our future held in room 135.

As I hugged my 21 kindergartners goodbye at the end of the year, I felt kindness, love, acceptance, joy, and above all, inspired.

These students come from a variety of backgrounds and have a dozen stories to tell, but one thing they have taught me is that compassion and love is the strongest bond. They taught me that each day is a new start and that no matter how hard the day before was, the next day can be wonderful. I learned that we may not have fully grasped the idea of addition after many hours of lessons, but that a student who is excelling can walk over to a student who is struggling and show them how to do a problem. I learned that maybe, just maybe, 21 kindergartners have a thing or two to show me about the beauty of a community.

My Project

In kindergarten, we spend a lot of time working together. We read together, write together, sing together, and tell stories together. We become a close-knit community and we take care of each other and look out for one another. However, 5 and 6-year-old students love to demonstrate independence. They are excited to learn and have a strong desire to show what they know. Whiteboards give my students the opportunity that they crave. With a classroom set of whiteboards, my students can demonstrate what they know during carpet time, small group time, and independent work time!

While supporting their independence by donating to our project, you can also help our class continue to build a strong and caring community.

We read "big books" during circle time, we brainstorm story ideas during writer's workshop, we write and read math problems during our math block, and we support each other during star student time. These are just small pieces of our day where a class easel would benefit these young learners. An easel allows students to practice speaking in front of their classmates and write their ideas where everyone can see them. In kindergarten, our students are young and small, and cannot always reach the whiteboard that is a foot taller than their bodies. An easel will also allow me to write messages, sight words, letter names, and numbers that strengthen students literacy skills.

And lastly, our students have the opportunity to use ipads and computers in the classroom during small group time. This time is critical to enhance students reading, math, and fine motor abilities. Headphones allow students to work quietly at their station and focus less on what their group mates are doing, and focus more on their task at hand.
