Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
My students are funny, exuberant, high-energy Spanish-speaking second graders. Most are from low-income immigrant families. My students demonstrate tremendous focus when I read to them. They love listening to stories and have insightful ideas about the books I read aloud. They are clearly ready to become great readers.
Despite serial disruptions to their education due to high teacher turn-over, my students are eager to learn and readily engage when offered the right materials and projects.
Many of my students are in the early stages of reading. They get really excited when they can access stories and information in books at their level. Unfortunately, the books in the classroom library are that I inherited are intended for a higher grade level and are inaccessible to my students.
My Project
I am an experienced teacher who brings a school library background to my first year at my school. I have reconfigured my classroom space to create a cozy classroom library. Now I need Spanish language books at my students' reading levels to bring the space to life.
My goal is to stock my classroom library with accessible, high-interest books that will give my students the tools they need to act on their excitement about reading.
My students need ample Spanish language books that span the range of their reading levels. In addition to enjoying and working with these books during Reader's Workshop, my students will use them for reading homework, which consists of daily reading followed by a fun and thought-provoking reading response.
