My Project

I am requesting funding to purchase a class set of "The Outsiders" by S.E. Hinton for my middle school English Language Arts classroom. This novel is a powerful and engaging text that addresses themes highly relevant to adolescents, including the dangers of stereotypes, the importance of loyalty, the development of empathy, and the ability to bridge social class divides.

Many of my students come from economically disadvantaged backgrounds and benefit greatly from literature that reflects real-life struggles, relationships, and choices.

Providing access to this novel will strengthen literacy skills, encourage meaningful discussion, and support students' social-emotional growth. A class set will allow every student access to a high-quality text without a financial burden on me or on families.

My school serves a community with a significant percentage of students from low-income households. Many families face financial challenges and cannot purchase classroom novels or additional reading materials. As a result, classroom resources must be carefully prioritized, and providing reading opportunities is so incredibly important at school.

Despite these challenges, my students are eager to read and connect with stories that reflect real-life experiences. "The Outsiders" is especially impactful for middle school students because it explores issues they encounter daily--belonging, identity, peer relationships, and fairness.

Providing a class set of this exceptional novel will not only strengthen reading skills but also help students develop empathy, resilience, and a greater understanding of others. With your support, we can create a learning experience that inspires students to think critically, connect emotionally, and succeed academically.
