Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
My wonderful eighth grade students are getting ready for high school. As we plan for the end of the school year, they have expressed they would like to have book clubs and literature circles. To realize this goal, they will need an assortment of novel sets.
With the competition of cell phones, social media, and video games, it is awesome my students choose to read!
One student referred to book clubs "like adults participate in" socially. It is beneficial to have students experience book clubs in school and possibly share their reading interests with their families and friends outside of school. I would like to enable my students to maintain this vision of reading as lifelong learners.
Located in an urban setting, our school was recently built to alleviate overcrowding of two schools. Our school district is affected by budget issues. Therefore, we lack some needed resources. Many of our students are English language learners. Students need novel sets, including some Spanish novels for their book clubs and literature circles.
My Project
When my eighth grade students were given the opportunity to collaborate and voice suggestions for end of the school year learning activities they would prefer, they requested literature circles and book clubs! After engaging in small group collaborative conversations, students shared their ideas with the class. Student groups' interests ranged from graphic novels to Shakespeare.
Based on what my students conveyed, I've chosen Hamlet, Black Panther, and more titles that I think they will enjoy reading and discussing in small groups with their classmates.
I look forward to presenting the books and observing students as they read and engage in discussions. I am so proud and encouraged that they choose to read!
