Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
I am the technology teacher at Jordan Community School and teach 650 awesome kids. I am asking for your help in providing the opportunity for students to tap into their musical creativity.
Like many Chicago Public schools, our music program has been cut for the last couple of years. I know it's not the same, but I was hoping to at least give them some academic exposure by integrating music with technology. Last year, I was lucky to procure money to buy some excellent music software, which allows students to easily create realistic sounding music. The problem is that this software runs from the CD drive, and the CD drives on 25 of our 30 computers burned out before I could use the software.
Replacing these drives would allow me to employ several lessons. Music facilitates the learning of other cultures, and hence of each other in our multicultural school. One idea is for students to create music of different cultures. I would have them research the culture and characteristics of the culture's music, and present these in a PowerPoint slide show along with their newly created song. Other possibilities include having students create background music for other multimedia projects, African American and Hispanic Heritage Month assemblies, graduation, poetry slams, art exhibits, etc. Of course, there's always a fun game of "Name That Instrument". Students will likely be familiar with the sounds of only a handful of instruments. I would love to be able to broaden their exposure. Ultimately, because the students are so interested in and motivated by music, the learning opportunities in both music and technology are endless.
This project would also provide our S.W.A.T. (Students Working to Advance Technology) members with an invaluable learning experience. S.W.A.T. members would be the ones to replace the CD-ROM drives. They love taking apart the machines and are so proud of themselves when they repair a machine on their own.
Thank you for any consideration.
