Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Project

The layout of a library can be the difference between a child seeing a room full of "homework" and a room full of "adventures." Moving away from traditional spine-out shelving toward forward-facing (or face-out) displays is a game-changer for literacy development.

Children, especially those in elementary, are highly visual learners.

A thin book spine with small text doesn't communicate much to a six-year-old. However, a vibrant cover tells a story instantly. Forward-facing books act like "billboards" for stories, lowering the barrier to entry for kids who aren't yet fluent readers.

Where you may see acrylic plant suction cup window displays, I see shelves for the window to display books that encourage students to come in the library. Instead of record holders, I see shelves to put on the end cap for forward facing books that are popular or ones that need a second chance.

Books about the library are also important. If a fictional book's setting is in the library, students then realize our own library can be so much more, too.
