Students told me they love Magna-Tiles because it gives students a chance to be creative and to construct. As an educator, I love Magna-Tiles because they are so versatile. Students can work on their own, with a buddy, or with a group. Students are using critical thinking skills and building collaboration skills, too.\r\n\r\nMy most recent group of students built a Christmas village with a road circling it. Students got paper and colored pencils and created street names and labeled buildings. Our students were intrigued right away when they found out it was a competitive puzzle. Students became even more invested when they learned the first one to solve the puzzle was able to flip their opponent's work board. Lots of laughs and fun was had all while students were critical thinking. \r\n\r\nWatching students quickly troubleshoot while playing Kanoodle reminded me of lessons I teach about coding. If a function doesn't work the way the student wants it to, then they need to rethink what their commands are rather than blame the computer. The books prompted students to have conversations about taxes at the book fair, starting their own businesses (dog walkers and babysitters were popular), and when their parent took them to open a bank account. \r\n\r\nOne of the lessons we'll do is give students a budget to plan a dream vacation somewhere in the United States to work along the social studies curriculum. Another lessons is about trading and bartering during the colonial time period. Our Library Leaders (students in fourth and fifth grade who use recess time to help in the library) have already taken control of the air plants. Library Leaders come in the library in the morning on Mondays and dunk the air plants in water. Then another group of Library Leaders comes in at recess and takes the air plants out to dry off. Once we talked about how to treat the spinning bookcases (one person at a time and turn the book self slowly) we had a line of students ready to try them out. \r\n\r\nWe put DC comics, Marvel graphic novels, books about Pokemon, Star Wars, Legos, and My Little Pony on one of the spinners. Another shelf has books by Rick Riordan Presents which are longer chapter books about mythologies from all over the world. The final spinners have Branches books by Scholastic which are shorter chapter books and a have colorful pictures. \r\n\r\nWhen many of these books where on the shelfs, we debated getting rid of them due to the infrequent circulation. The cardboard magazine file holders have been a game changer...or will be! The magazine holders have call numbers on them in the everybody section (picture books). I explained to students that the magazines holders are there to help students locate the correct book by using the author's last name. Next month, I'll teach the lesson to all students in grades 2-5 as they also learn about our online catalog and how to find the book in the library. \r\n\r\nThe books about using the library have been wonderful to pull out and share with students as they ask questions or to remind students have expectations. Most have never left the state. These country books give everyone a glimpse into countries they may never visit, or the books may start a hunger to travel. \r\n\r\nThe first books to go were on countries were some of our student's parents are from- \"do we have a book in France? I also take a picture of all new books, create a Google Slideshow, and share it with students and staff so everyone knows what is new. These books are a hit with both boys and girls and kindergarteners through fifth graders.\r\n\r\nI hope to use them this year to teach students about researching.
