Broadening Our Reading Horizons

Help me give my students an introduction to important individuals they might not know yet - Mae Jemison, Eugenie Clark, Malala Yousafzai, and Harriett Tubman just to name a few.

My Students

We are a fourth grade class in a suburb of Kansas City, Kansas. My students walk into class full of energy every day.

They are kind-hearted young people, already demonstrating kindness and compassion beyond their years.

Our school is participating in the Second Step program aimed at developing problem solving, empathy, and life skills in interacting with others. I am excited to see where this program takes them.

I have introduced a variety of opportunities to broaden their horizons and build on their strengths. They are embracing the challenges and rising to the occasion.

My Project

My students enjoy reading, and I often find them absorbed in a book. I hope this project will expose them to books they might not have chosen otherwise.

“Broadening Our Reading Horizons” will introduce students to books about individuals that have made a difference in the lives of others and hopefully inspire them to dream big and do the same.

Reading books about people such as Mae Jemison in “Mae Among the Stars” , Malala Yousafzai in “Malala’s Magic Pencil”, Cesar Chavez in “Harvesting Hope” and John Lewis in “March” will give them the chance to see others from their culture and gender and realize that their dreams started early and although they faced great challenges, these individuals persevered and achieved incredible accomplishments that improved the lives of themselves and others.
