This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Project

My students have recently completed a study of Mary Shelley’s Frankenstein, a cornerstone of Gothic literature that explores ambition, isolation, and what it means to be human. While many students connected with the novel’s themes, the language and structure can be challenging.

To deepen comprehension and expand literary analysis, I am requesting a class set of Frankenstein (Manga Classics).

This visually rich adaptation will allow students to revisit key scenes, analyze character development, and compare how meaning is conveyed through both prose and graphic storytelling.

Using the manga format, students will:

Analyze how visuals shape tone, mood, and theme

Compare textual and visual interpretations of key moments

Strengthen critical thinking through multimodal analysis

Engage more deeply with complex literature in an accessible format

This project supports diverse learners by providing multiple entry points into rigorous content, making classic literature more inclusive and engaging.

Many students struggle to access classic texts due to archaic language and dense structure. The manga adaptation offers a bridge—maintaining the integrity of the original story while presenting it in a format that resonates with modern readers.

By incorporating visual literacy alongside traditional analysis, students will build skills that extend beyond English class, including interpretation, inference, and media analysis. These are essential skills for college, career, and real-world communication.
