This gift was more than just a class set of books—it allowed students to engage with powerful themes of survival, morality, and human connection. As we read, students analyzed how the father \"rages against the dying of the light\" much like Dylan Thomas describes in his poem. One student explained, \"The father rages by not giving up, even when there is no food, no safety, and no hope. He wants his son to carry the fire, and that's his way of resisting death.\" Activities like these sharpened their skills in analysis, empathy, and resilience.\r\n\r\nStudents also reflected on their own values by imagining a world where civilization has collapsed. They considered whether survival, morality, or human connection would guide their choices the most. One student shared, \"If the world ended, I think survival would matter most at first, but in the long run, human connection would be the most important. Without other people, life would have no purpose.\" These reflections encouraged students to apply the novel's themes to their own lives, strengthening our classroom community.\r\n\r\nFinally, students expanded their understanding by studying the graphic novel adaptation by Manu Larcenet. This visual version deepened their interpretation of mood and atmosphere. As one student said, \"The dark drawings showed the sadness and fear in a way that felt stronger than just words.\" Because of your generosity, my students had an unforgettable reading experience that will stay with them long after the last page, inspiring them to think more critically and empathetically about their lives and the world around them.","fullyFundedDate":1739294696475,"projectUrl":"project/exploring-resilience-and-hope-through-th/8887089/","projectTitle":"Exploring Resilience and Hope through The Road by Cormac McCarthy","teacherDisplayName":"Mr. Williams","teacherPhotoUrl":"https://storage.donorschoose.net/dc_prod/images/teacher/profile/272x272/tp6103138_272x272.jpg?width=272&height=272&fit=bounds&auto=webp&t=1543438808305","teacherClassroomUrl":"classroom/jcwiii"},{"teacherId":6103138,"projectId":8148668,"letterContent":"Your generous support has brought \"Frankenstein\" to life in our classroom, both literally and figuratively. Each student now has their copy of Mary Shelley's classic, a gift that has sparked curiosity, imagination, and a deeper understanding of literature. This opportunity has allowed students to explore complex themes such as empathy, ambition, and alienation, fostering academic growth and personal reflection. Watching students engage with the text—marking passages, asking insightful questions, and making connections to their lives—has been inspiring. Your investment has transformed our classroom into a space where ideas flourish and creativity thrives.\r\n\r\nReading outside the classroom is rare for many of my students, yet this project has encouraged them to immerse themselves in literature in ways I hadn't anticipated. As we examined the story's influence on contemporary works and pop culture, students began to recognize how timeless stories shape the media they consume today. Discussions about Victor Frankenstein's unchecked ambition and the creature's profound loneliness resonated deeply with them, prompting meaningful conversations about human nature and the consequences of our actions. This shared exploration cultivated empathy and critical thinking, skills that will serve them well beyond the classroom walls.\r\n\r\nThis journey through \"Frankenstein\" concluded with analyzing gothic literature, romanticism, and the Byronic qualities of its characters—ideas we extended to modern narratives relevant to the students. Their growing ability to connect classic literature to their experiences and contemporary stories has been remarkable. None of this would have been possible without your kindness and belief in the power of education. Thank you for inspiring a new generation of readers and thinkers; your impact will ripple through their lives for years.","fullyFundedDate":1713453704001,"projectUrl":"project/bring-frankenstein-back-to-life/8148668/","projectTitle":"Bring Frankenstein Back to Life","teacherDisplayName":"Mr. Williams","teacherPhotoUrl":"https://storage.donorschoose.net/dc_prod/images/teacher/profile/272x272/tp6103138_272x272.jpg?width=272&height=272&fit=bounds&auto=webp&t=1543438808305","teacherClassroomUrl":"classroom/jcwiii"}],"pageName":"schoolpage_25928","usesDonorsChoose":true,"infoPageType":"school","demographicsInfo":{"numStudents":1080,"numTeachers":52,"percentFrplEligible":76,"percentAsian":10,"percentBlack":2,"percentWhite":5,"percentIndigenous":0,"percentLatinx":78,"showFreeAndReducedPriceLunchInfo":true,"showDemographicsInfo":true,"sourceTooltipString":"the National Center for Education Statistics","gradesServed":"9 - 12","studentTeacherRatio":"20.8:1","demographicsDataSource":"MDR School","equityFocus":true,"titleOne":false,"metroType":"SUBURBAN","ncesMetroType":"SUBURB_LARGE"},"inStateSupporters":68.8,"schoolId":25928,"financialInfo":null,"twitterShareText":"Learn more about Covina High School on @DonorsChoose:","schoolName":"Covina High School","canonicalPageUrl":"schools/california/covina-valley-unified-school-district/covina-high-school/25928"}
