These texts have helped remove barriers that often make this novel feel overwhelming. Students are better able to follow the plot, understand key moments, and engage with complex ideas like propaganda and government control through both visuals and text. What was once intimidating now feels approachable, allowing more students to participate meaningfully.\r\n\r\nIn our classroom, reading is an active and collaborative process. Students annotate, discuss, and analyze how authors develop themes and messages. With these graphic novels, they are building critical literacy skills such as interpreting symbolism, analyzing the author's purpose, and making connections between text and visual elements. These skills align directly with our ERWC curriculum and help students strengthen both their reading comprehension and their critical thinking about what they read.\r\n\r\nThese resources have been especially impactful for my English Language Learners and students with IEPs. I have seen students who typically struggle with traditional texts become more confident and willing to contribute to class discussions. Some are pointing out details in the illustrations, while others are making deeper connections to the novel's themes. Your support has not only improved comprehension but also helped foster confidence, inclusion, and a greater sense of success for all students.","fullyFundedDate":1775752775594,"projectUrl":"project/big-brother-in-pictures-bringing-1984-t/10091202/","projectTitle":"Big Brother in Pictures: Bringing 1984 to Life","teacherDisplayName":"Mr. Williams","teacherPhotoUrl":"https://storage.donorschoose.net/dc_prod/images/teacher/profile/272x272/tp6103138_272x272.jpg?width=272&height=272&fit=bounds&auto=webp&t=1543438808305","teacherClassroomUrl":"classroom/jcwiii"},{"teacherId":6103138,"projectId":10151379,"letterContent":"Because of your generosity, my classroom has been transformed in a way that directly supports student learning every single day. What was once a room filled with outdated desk openings from an old computer lab has now become a cleaner, more functional, and student-centered learning environment. Your support helped us move one step closer to a classroom that reflects the needs of today's students.\r\n\r\nBefore receiving these desktop power bank grommets, the holes in our desks were more than just an eyesore—they were a constant distraction. They collected debris, created an uninviting atmosphere, and made it difficult for students to stay focused and organized. Now, those same spaces have been repurposed into something meaningful. Students have easy access to power for their Chromebooks, allowing them to stay engaged in lessons without worrying about their devices running out of charge.\r\n\r\nThis simple change has had a powerful impact. Students are more prepared, more focused, and more invested in their learning. By removing small but persistent obstacles, you've helped create a space where students can concentrate on what truly matters: thinking critically, collaborating with their peers, and growing as learners.\r\n\r\nBeyond the physical transformation, your support has shown my students that people they may never meet truly care about their education. That message is powerful. It reminds them that their learning matters and that they are worth investing in.\r\n\r\nThank you for helping improve not just our classroom, but the daily experience of every student who walks through our door. Your generosity has made a lasting difference.","fullyFundedDate":1773863660631,"projectUrl":"project/em-power-the-people-desktop-powerbanks/10151379/","projectTitle":"Em-power the People! This gift was more than just a class set of books—it allowed students to engage with powerful themes of survival, morality, and human connection. As we read, students analyzed how the father \"rages against the dying of the light\" much like Dylan Thomas describes in his poem. One student explained, \"The father rages by not giving up, even when there is no food, no safety, and no hope. He wants his son to carry the fire, and that's his way of resisting death.\" Activities like these sharpened their skills in analysis, empathy, and resilience.\r\n\r\nStudents also reflected on their own values by imagining a world where civilization has collapsed. They considered whether survival, morality, or human connection would guide their choices the most. One student shared, \"If the world ended, I think survival would matter most at first, but in the long run, human connection would be the most important. Without other people, life would have no purpose.\" These reflections encouraged students to apply the novel's themes to their own lives, strengthening our classroom community.\r\n\r\nFinally, students expanded their understanding by studying the graphic novel adaptation by Manu Larcenet. This visual version deepened their interpretation of mood and atmosphere. As one student said, \"The dark drawings showed the sadness and fear in a way that felt stronger than just words.\" Because of your generosity, my students had an unforgettable reading experience that will stay with them long after the last page, inspiring them to think more critically and empathetically about their lives and the world around them.","fullyFundedDate":1739294696475,"projectUrl":"project/exploring-resilience-and-hope-through-th/8887089/","projectTitle":"Exploring Resilience and Hope through The Road by Cormac McCarthy","teacherDisplayName":"Mr. Williams","teacherPhotoUrl":"https://storage.donorschoose.net/dc_prod/images/teacher/profile/272x272/tp6103138_272x272.jpg?width=272&height=272&fit=bounds&auto=webp&t=1543438808305","teacherClassroomUrl":"classroom/jcwiii"}],"pageName":"schoolpage_25928","usesDonorsChoose":true,"infoPageType":"school","demographicsInfo":{"numStudents":1080,"numTeachers":52,"percentFrplEligible":76,"percentAsian":10,"percentBlack":2,"percentWhite":5,"percentIndigenous":0,"percentLatinx":78,"showFreeAndReducedPriceLunchInfo":true,"showDemographicsInfo":true,"sourceTooltipString":"the National Center for Education Statistics","gradesServed":"9 - 12","studentTeacherRatio":"20.8:1","demographicsDataSource":"MDR School","equityFocus":true,"titleOne":false,"metroType":"SUBURBAN","ncesMetroType":"SUBURB_LARGE"},"inStateSupporters":70.4,"schoolId":25928,"financialInfo":null,"twitterShareText":"Learn more about Covina High School on @DonorsChoose:","schoolName":"Covina High School","canonicalPageUrl":"schools/california/covina-valley-unified-school-district/covina-high-school/25928"}
