Enthusiastic, energetic, empathetic, creative, inclusive and motivated are a few words that come to mind when thinking about the young learners in my class. Our class is comprised of eighteen, amazing, transitional kindergartners. Within the class, there are gifted and talented students, students with disabilities and English language learners. Despite this, the school has received academic achievement awards the past six years. It is a California Distinguished School and a School For Advanced Studies.
"The innocence of children is what makes them stand out as a shining example to the rest of mankind." -Kurt Chambers
These accomplishments are due to the strong partnership between school and home, and we would love to throw the community into the mix, too. This is a school where high academic standards are maintained for all students in a safe and nurturing environment. The faculty and staff are lifelong learners themselves and foster that love of learning in their students. The faculty and staff work hard to ensure that the record of achievement continues.
My Project
Teaching and talking to kids about money is something many of our parents never did for us. Storytelling is an incredibly powerful tool for learning and broaching hard topics with kids of all ages. These books will help start the conversation about money.
If a child is old enough to count, they are old enough to start to understand these basic concepts of money and finance.
Kids are never too young to start understanding that everything we buy, consume and use costs money. From the groceries in our refrigerator to the toys in their room, from the roof over our heads to the clothes on their back, it all costs money.
These financial literacy books, which the students will be allowed to take home in the Store More Book Pouches, explore the concepts of needs vs. wants. My students will learn that money must be earned, explore the power of saving, and understand the importance of generosity.
I am hoping these books allow families to start the discussion of financial literacy at home.
