Bring the Ocean to our Midwest Classrooms!

My students need a one hour mini assembly on sharks, given by an Underwater Adventures aquarium instructor.

Hooray! This project is fully funded

I teach a great bunch of first graders in a school that has over 50 percent free and reduced lunch. My students have very diverse backgrounds, and many come from homes where English is a second language. My school services English as a second language, Autistic, and many other students with unique needs.

Since our school is located far from the ocean, many of our students will never get the opportunity to learn first had about ocean life and ocean animals. They know only what they see in books and watch on TV. Many of our families do not have the resources to travel that far.

To help students get a better understanding of ocean life, we would like to bring an outreach educator from a local aquarium to our school. He or she will do a one hour mini assembly on sharks for 80 first graders. Sharks are a favorite reading topic with these young children. The mini assembly will include live animals and animal artifacts for students to see and touch. They will also receive a free child admission for their family to use if they visit the aquarium at a later date. Here is a sampling of what they will present: "Sharks: Fish or mammal? Friend or foe? Dive into the amazing underwater world of sharks!"

I hope you consider helping us "bring the ocean to our Midwest classroom." You will be giving students a life science lesson they won't soon forget! Thank You for your time!
