Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
Do not confine your children to your own learning, for they were born in another time" -Chinese Proverb. Every day, technology continuously evolves fast & furiously, enhancing our lives. However, technology is not always available to all students, especially those who need help on reading.
All of my 30 students (within my 2 classes) are English learners and come from a very impoverished neighborhood of Dallas.
According to the State Accountability System, my school is considered IR (improvement required).
Like any other urban school, we face many challenges, one of them is keeping up with the never ending technological revolution. Despite the limitations and difficulties, my students are thirsty for knowledge, they love to read, and I enjoy seeing their faces when they go "I finished reading my book!".
Success is sweet, but it comes with lots of effort, and lots of leveled books. My students are a great bunch, they are not afraid of working hard, and neither am I. However, the lack of leveled books hinders their progress, to solve this issue we should take advantage of what technology has to offer us (tons of leveled books at our finger tips), and use it to enhance and speed up our students' learning process.
My Project
My students will use the 4 tablets during guided reading. They will have at their finger tips all the leveled books (English and Spanish) they need, and I need when working with them in small reading groups. At the same time their reading progression will be tracked automatically. Also, they will be able to use interactive web based reading activities, all with the goal of enhancing their learning experience.
We cannot teach our students in the same way we taught a few years ago.
Change is necessary to motivate and engage students not only in the curriculum we are responsible for teaching, but in school in general.
Reading is the only subject that impacts children's success across all other subjects. To ensure that our students are reading at, and possibly above their grade level, we must reach for all the right tools, including technology, and use them effectively.
