Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Students

Many students live in apartments and have few opportunities to witness the beauty of nature. Simple observations and identification of plants, animals, and insects are foreign to our students.

Inner city children are used to hearing the sounds of traffic, sirens, planes, and bells.

The sounds and smells of nature are foreign and I want them to experience it in a school garden. Being able to plant seeds, nurture them, and watch them grow is essential for them to understand the natural world.

My Project

Using the patio garden boxes, students can plant and tend a garden. Our hope is to attract butterflies, birds, and insects and be able to witness the natural world. As we study the plants, we hope to collect seeds and be able to replant. With careful study, we will plant native plants and plants to attract butterflies.

It is important to make a connection to the environment in order to protect and maintain the earth.

As the students become more exposed to the natural world, they will take more responsibility as future caretakers of the planet.
