Breathe For Change: Bringing Compassion and SEL Into Schools

I need to bring compassion and mindfulness to my school. This teaching will improve students' social-emotional competence and educational success, and ultimately lead to social healing and change.

My Project

Breathe For Change's yoga and mindfulness teacher training will teach me necessary tools to promote wellness and compassion in my school. After training, I plan to teach mindful practices, which will help students with the 5 components in Casel's SEL Framework: Self Awareness, Self-Management, Social Awareness, Relationship Skills and Responsible Decision Making. Students will study and read about Casel's Wheel and focus on the CASEL Standard: Social-Awareness which teaches the abilities to understand the perspectives of and empathize with others, including those from diverse backgrounds, cultures, and contexts. We will use the Casel Guide to Schoolwide Essentials book and work on activities to see situations from the perspective of their peers and school community. They will study the 7 Habits for Highly Effective Teens Concentrating on the 5th Habit: Seek First to Understand, Then to Be Understood, which teaches you to listen through the others' perspective and be compassionate. They will also work on Habit 6 Synergy, learning to work with others from diverse backgrounds. Students will learn to be compassionate and use those skills to work on an anti-bullying and spread kindness campaign on campus to help alleviate suffering of students from bullying. The students will use Covey's Habit 2: Begin with the End in Mind to create a plan to promote acts of kindness throughout the school community. I will measure success in my students’ understanding of compassion through creation of school kindness campaigns and promotion. Student groups will be created to assist with student trauma from bullying and discrimination. Through compassion we will see a decrease in school behavior issues and an increase in positive school culture. Positive school climate and compassion has shown to bring an 11% academic growth increase, which will be a measurable assessment.
