Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Students

The students that would benefit from this grant are students in my psychology class. These students come from a low socioeconomic suburban school. Over 93% of my students qualify for Free Lunch. This means that many/most of them cannot afford basic food and clothing supplies. These kids are underprivileged and under-served. Even with all of these disadvantages, they are amazing, wonderful kids.

I see them daily come to school and work hard, knowing that they struggle at home.

When they go home at night, many do no know if they will get to eat that night or if they will have to wait for school the next day. These are kids who want to learn and be successful, but often do not have support at home. Many of their parents have never finished high school, let alone graduate college. This challenging environment makes studying at home more difficult.

My Project

Students will be able to use the models to see the structures of the brain. This will help them better understand the locations of these brain structures and learn each function. Previously, I used pictures on the board, but this does not adequately show the spatial relation between the structures or the relative size of one structure to another. Being able to see and handle a life-size model will better help students learn the locations of the structures in class. As needed, students may be able to check one out to be able to study at home.
