Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
Close your eyes and think about how beautiful the sound of a violin, viola, cello or string bass makes. Now think of these Heavenly Instruments played without a bow. That's our problem. We have 18 orchestra instruments with no bows. The students are just plucking their instruments with no bow.
We are a Title One School where most of our students come from a very low socio-economic environment.
There are also 83% of students that receive free/reduced lunch. Many of our students are Hispanic and they are in our English Language Learner Program. Because of their limited language ability, many of my orchestra students love to express themselves through either the violin, viola, cello or string bass. For them, music is a powerful motivator that brings them together as a community of learners that express themselves through the power of the ultimate universal language of music.
My Project
Many of my students are begging to play with a decent orchestra bow. The average orchestra bow contains 180 hairs. Most of our bows have only 20 to 50 hairs on them. Plus, our school has no budget to re-hair any of our bows. The answer to our problem is that we desperately need some bows. Every single day I have students that come up to me asking if I can give them a better bow and I have to tell them that I'm working on the problem, but I feel that the students are loosing hope in receiving any type of help whatsoever. It's really a downer for a student to have to pluck all their music instead of playing with a quality orchestra bow. The students' fingers blister up and they get very frustrated. Eight of my students have dropped orchestra because of this desperate situation. Our school has absolutely no money, especially for any type of performing arts groups. A little goes a long way for these students that have very little in their lives. We really need good quality bows.
My Advanced students ask me everyday, "When can we perform a concert?" I tell them when we get some more bows.
Donor's Choose is our last hope! Please help make these students know that someone cares about their lives with a generous donation that will help them make beautiful music within their community. They want to share their talents, but they are limited because they don't have all the tools for the job. Please give these at-risk students new bows for their concert bows. Thank you.
