Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
Our school is part of District Reference Group which is the second lowest socioeconomic level a school can be placed in.
As an eighth grade ELA teacher, I have witnessed the great needs of my students.
A high percentage of the students who attend my school receive free or reduced-price lunch and struggle to have other basic needs met as well. These circumstances can make it very difficult for some families to afford basic school supplies.
Many of my students are also English language learners (ELLs) and need extra support when reading grade-level materials. The activities that we complete, both in and out of the classroom, are greatly restricted by the socioeconomic makeup of our student body and the lack of funding for resources, especially when it comes to technology.
The students in our school come from very diverse backgrounds and cultures and often do not have the support available at home that allows them to succeed at higher levels. Many students are struggling to learn the language while trying to complete their eighth-grade work. The students themselves are very willing to work in school and take the opportunity to utilize the limited resources that are available.
My Project
One of the novels we read during the year is To Kill a Mockingbird by Harper Lee. This classic novel teaches themes of tolerance and taking a stand for what is right through the eyes of a young girl.
I want to continue the message that To Kill a Mockingbird promotes by offering my students books that promote diversity in an effort to learn to respect others.
Not only do we read books as a class, but throughout the year, students are expected to independently read as well. The books requested in this project will allow my students to choose books that have these positive messages and promote diversity.
