Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Students

The students in our school community (grades 9-12) are wonderfully unique! They encompass a variety of backgrounds, beliefs, and ideas all of which help create a diverse learning environment.

Many of our students come from disadvantaged backgrounds and do not have access to the privileges that many teenagers take for granted.

Our students, like all students, deserve learning opportunities and access to information to help them become successful, contributing members of society. Our students are full of passion, energy, and excitement. They take pride in their successes, especially when overcoming obstacles.

My Project

I am looking to fill my classroom bookshelf with high-interest young adult literature with books like The Hate U Give, Carve the Mark, Everything, Everything, and Hate List. I have found that my students love to read, just not what we typically assign them! I know the importance of reading and I want this project to help all students discover the joy of reading.

My hope is that by providing students access to high-interest literature that they will become more engaged in reading and will read more frequently.

Reading helps one become a stronger, reader, writer, and thinker. Reading helps develop one's vocabulary and expands one's mind. Reading can help develop the critical thinking skills necessary to be successful in college and beyond and can encourage all students to become lifelong learners.

I want students to develop the positive skills and enjoyment that come with reading. As a teacher, I can work with my students on developing their skills when we can get caught up in a conversation about literature. I want my students to be able to be excited about reading and to enjoy the lifelong benefits that will follow.
