The goal of the "Free Libraries" project is to put books in the hands of all students. As a high school English teacher I am both saddened and filled with joy when a student tells me, "That was the first book I have ever read and I loved it!" I know the importance of reading and I want this project to help all students discover the joy of reading. Three Free Libraries stationed throughout the school will be mini "houses" where free books will be kept. Our school's latest SBAC test scores reveal that only 38.6% of students met or exceeded achievement level for English language arts. My hope is that by providing students free access to high interest literature that they will become more engaged in reading and will read more frequently. Reading helps one become a stronger, reader, writer, and thinker. Reading helps develop one's vocabulary and expands one's mind. Reading can help develop the critical thinking skills necessary to be successful in college and beyond, and can encourage all students to become lifelong learners. The impact of this project can be measured through future test scores as well as the tracking the number of books that are taken out of the Free Libraries. I anticipate developing and sharing ideas for other schools to implement Free Libraries. The funds for this project will go directly towards purchasing high interest young adult literature. Our school's woodworking class will design and build the free libraries and our art classes will make them vibrant. This project will help keep the Free Libraries full of books and will help bring to life a project that all students can be proud of and that all students can benefit from.
