Books That Look Like Us, Stories That Inspire Us

Help me give my students the opportunity to experience the joy of reading.

Mr. Brooks McClintock Middle School
Charlotte, NC Grades 6-8

My Project

My students deserve books that allow them to see themselves, their families, and their dreams reflected in the pages they read. Every day, I am inspired by their resilience, curiosity, creativity, and determination. They come from diverse cultural backgrounds and bring unique perspectives to our classroom discussions, yet many struggle to find books that truly capture their experiences and interests. What I love most about my students is their eagerness to connect learning to their own lives and communities. They are thoughtful, insightful young people who deserve access to literature that affirms their identities while also introducing them to new ideas, cultures, and possibilities.

The right book can transform a struggling reader into a confident learner and a curious student into a lifelong reader.

This project will help repopulate our classroom library with high-interest, culturally relevant books that feature African American, Latino, Asian, and other diverse voices. These resources will provide students with both "mirrors" that reflect their own experiences and "windows" into the lives of others. By increasing access to engaging and representative literature, students will strengthen their reading comprehension, expand their vocabulary, develop empathy, and build a genuine love of reading. Most importantly, they will see that their stories matter and that their voices belong in the world of books.

The goal of this project is to create a classroom library that inspires every student to pick up a book, find a connection, and discover the joy of reading. When students have access to books they can relate to, they read more often, think more deeply, and participate more confidently in learning. With your support, our classroom library will become more than a collection of books; it will become a place where students feel seen, valued, and empowered to succeed.
